Love that chicken from Popeyes
Twin City residents were salty, after traveling near and far to Popeyes Chicken on Lake Street, to find out that the franchise was not honoring the nationally advertised eight pieces of chicken for $4.99 on Earth Day. The local Fox 9 News thought this story was so mind-blowing, that they sent a field reporter to cover the shotty business practices and to get reactions from the irate costumers. While some may appreciate Fox for pulling the covers off the only Popeyes in the state of Minnesota – a franchise notorious for not honoring national deals – I feel there are bigger ramifications to this news stations’ coverage.
For starters, the fact that they did not honor the ad was not news worthy. Most national ads have disclaimers at the bottom that say, “Offer may vary at participating locations.” Even though two reliable sources informed me that this particular commercial did not have a disclaimer, most American consumers know the drill. We’ve come to accept airports and malls charging more than local chains, and no one throws a fit about it - we either buy the food or we move on. If the media decided to cover every time a local business did not honor a national ad, there would be a story practically every day. The bottom line is this, when you are a franchise, it is your prerogative to run sales as you see fit. As consumers, we may not like it, but it’s the fact of the matter.
The bigger issue I have with this “news” story is that it reinforces stereotypes to those who have negative perceptions about black people. The Fox 9 reporter started his report by saying, “I haven’t seen people this passionate about something in a long time!” Really, Mr. Reporter? Our country is at war, kids of color are steadily scoring lower on tests than their counterparts, people are losing their jobs and our country is in a recession, and the only thing we can get passionate about is fried chicken? What is more disheartening is that the people actually gave the news crew the material to use. I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn’t watching the Chappelle Show or Chocolate News. Here they are, throwing a fit, because they couldn’t get their friend chicken. One foolish person had the audacity to let us know he caught a cab all the way from Burnsville. I haven’t taken the time to do a cost benefit analysis, but I do know cabs have a minimal fee of $5 and the alleged sale was for $4.99 plus tax.
To add to that, unlike our white brothers and sisters, people of color always represent the whole when negatively shown in the media. When the news has a breaking story that says, “Man caught stealing happy meal toys,” my first reaction is…please don’t let him be black. Why? It’s because unlearned individuals tend to think this one ignoramus represents the entire race. Arabs are now targeted because of the actions of some militant Muslims. Yet, whites were not targeted when Timothy McVeigh decided to drive a bomb into a government complex in Oklahoma City or when Ted Kaczynski, AKA the Unabomber, decided to send bombs via U.S. mail.
The reporter concluded his story by saying, “The moral of the story is, don’t mess with hungry people.” No Fox news, the moral of the story is you need to report on issues that matter for a change.

I saw this on the news. I knew it would happen because that Popeyes rarely honors national ads, which is really messed up since they are the only Popeyes in MN.

You make some good points, but the way stories are framed to sensationalize and to trade on stereotypes isn't new. Many of us are very passionate about many of the things you mention in your message. However, very few media sources will cover our reactions to the educational gap, health disparities, lack of access to higher education institutions, etc.

CRACKIN UP!!! I'm just now seeing this email. Well, the sale was on in Chicago and there was traffic backed up from 67th and Western to 75th!!!! I don't think Popeye's Chicken will have a sale like that again!!(LOL) D
Girl, LOL….if this is the same or similar sale from last Weds, I tried to go through the drive through near my house for Popeyes and the line was 2 blocks long!~ The sale they had was a “Spring Sale” 10 pieces for $5.99….. Girl, I had my mouth fixed for some that evening too and did not get it! I heard later that the back up problem occurred when they allowed folks who did not have the coupon to get the sale price anyway…so that backed everything up… You know how you and your cuzins get when fried chicken is involved!!!! LOL……
Ryan you have some really good points but I think you have to take in account that we are in a recession and that any type of deal or savings will attract all types of people. All jokes aside chicken is loved by all races not just people of color. In this instance I think Popeyes is the main culprit , you have to know that Fox is a business and they will sensationalize any bit of news especially here in MN where nothing really happens.I do agree that as usual the reporter found the most ridiculous people to interview but just because I want some cheap ,good chicken does not mean I don't care about my country, the economy or the welfare of the youth.I might just be hungry and some cheap chicken is what's on my mind.
In the words of Snoop(since your poll is pot related) CHURCH
McBluffer, everyone likes fried chicken, I make no qualms about that. However, blacks are the ones stereotyped with fried chicken, watermelon and ribs. If you think this has gone away, just look at the foolishness that was circulated when President Obama ran for office. The point I am getting at is this, one, cover real news. Two, stop clowning on TV over some darn chicken. If they do not have the sale, buy something else or take your butt home. Don't make a spectacle of yourself, because unfortunately, in the US, if you are a person of color, you represent more than yourself. And did you note the cast in this news story was 99.9% black? Go figure.
I love Popeye's chicken! It's worth the drive when I visit the cities at times!
Ryan, very good post and your criticism of this coverage is right on. In the year 2009 there is no excuse--no matter how bad the economy is, or how "newsworthy" a bargain may be--to cover this story in this way. The stereotype of blacks as ignorant simpletons who only care about fried chicken is far too well known for FOX to plead ignorance. Lyden has never been one of FOX's most ethical reporters (hah!), and he should have known better. Shame on him and shame on the local FOX affiliate.
On the other hand, Mr. Fair, shame on you for that nonsense on the sidebar about not supporting gay marriage. Its appearance next to this post is a startling contrast: on the one hand, arguing for fairness and equality; intolerance on the other.
I say that, of course, with respect and affection for you. We don't need to agree, right?
